Broke rallies against coal seam gas in the vineyards

Over 400 people turned out to rally against AGL’s coal seam gas plans in Broke on Sunday 16 October as part of a national day of action to defend water from mining.

This follows AGL’s recent decision to purchase the Poole’s Rock vineyard property that was owned by the late David Clarke, former Macquarie Bank chairman and anti-CSG advocate.

Many locals are angered by AGL’s plans to go ahead with CSG exploration despite strong community opposition.

This update comes via local Horticulturist, Peter Worgan, who attended the rally on Sunday:

423+ attended Broke protest as part of National Day of Action against coal seam gas. The town population of Broke is 402, but we had friends from neighboring towns here too from Wollombi, Lovedale, Bulga, Milbrodale and Pokolbin.

Speakers at the rally included Sean Gough from WAGE (Wollombi Valley against Gas Extraction) and Graeme Gibson from Hunter Valley Protection Alliance.

The Hunter Valley Protection Alliance reports: “The assembled crowd called upon the Government through the relevant Ministers, and the local member for the Upper Hunter George Souris, to honour its pre-election commitment to protect the Hunter Vineyard areas from coal seam methane gas exploration and extraction.”
